FAQ'S
"What does Episcopal Mean?" - It means having bishops. The greek word "episkopos'" is where we get the word for bishop. We're also protestant, so when we had to rename ourselves after the American Revolution (as praying for the king was frowned upon), we changed from Anglican to Protestant Episcopal as a way of naming ourselves. But don't worry, we're still Anglicans.
"What makes you Episcopalian or Anglican?" - We define ourselves by what Theologian Richard Hooker calls the 3-Legged Stool: Scripture, Reason, and Tradition. We encourage people to think about their spirituality by reading the Bible, understanding the history of the church, and having their own minds about how we relate to God and each other.
The Episcopal Church, like most communities, have a short hand way of speaking and the terms used can be mystifying. The National Episcopal Website hosts a great dictionary of Episcopal definitions, which can be found by clicking the button below.
